ARTIST STATMENT

I often find myself overwhelmed or sometimes even underwhelmed by reality and daily life, feeling this way I’m constantly looking for an escape. I’ve come to rely on making artwork as a way to get that mental escape I crave so much. 

Firstly, in just the process of making, I am able to find myself in a different mindset. The repetition places me in a flow that allows my mind to be at peace, reaching that distraction from my daily worries. 

My functional pottery is calming and minimalistic. By using a neutral palette, simple shapes, and modern designs I can create a sense of tranquility while the pieces are being used. By applying these elements I aim to produce a serene moment inspired by the mental escape I find when I’m in nature. 

My sculptural work also invokes a moment of escape but instead of serenity it’s supplying a fanciful and imaginative mental state. Though I continue to use muted and natural hues I sculpt subjects that are other worldly and fantasy like. They’re intended to take mundane moments and make them instead contemplative. By sparking creativity and encouraging curiosity my pieces satisfy that need for an escape for an underwhelming reality.
